Who should read this book?

Year 4 and upwards would enjoy this. This book would go well alongside war poetry or other literature about this era. Younger children would have the same mind set as Rose Blanche and so would not be able to see the meaning of the text.

Who are the main characters?

Rose Blanche young female

What can I learn from this book?

This book offers an insight into the second world war from a child’s perspective – a perspective that is not commonly shown in literature.

War, childhood, innocence, prejudice, WWII, family, death/mortality

What will excite a reader?

The illustrations are interesting and really give that all over picture. The images and text are very subtle but communicate some very strong ideas.

What did I think of it?

I thought the book was interesting and it gave me an insight in to world war two that I had yet to experience. It is similar to The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas as it shows a child’s innocent view of war.
